Insulation building materials can prevent heat from being transmitted from one location to another. Most insulation materials work by slowing both conductive and convective heat flow. One way to explain how insulation materials work is via thermal insulation.
Thermal insulation is typically found in walls and ceilings, particularly outside walls, when heat is most likely to gain or be lost. The concept of thermal insulation is straightforward: keep one side of the insulation warmer than the other. Most cold chain warehouses require a degree of insulation to ensure goods stored have regulated temperatures and are under a controlled environment.
Type of Insulation Material
There are three general categories of insulation materials. These classifications use the chemical composition of the base material used to make the insulating material.
1. Inorganic Insulation Materials
There are two categories under inorganic insulation materials. They are fibrous and cellular materials. Examples of fibrous materials are glass and rock wool. Glass wool has inherent properties that make it an excellent thermal and fire-resistant insulator. Similarly, rock wool has high insulation capacity and is light and versatile.
While they both serve different purposes, they do have similarities. Both glass and rock wool are non-combustible and provide excellent noise reduction. However, rock wool is more commonly used in constructions due to its ability to withstand extreme temperature and protects against fire.
2. Organic Insulation Materials
Organic materials are polyurethane foam, polystyrene board, phenolic foam, and petrochemical materials such as XPS, PIR and PUR. They are mainly petroleum products, are low weight, have good processability, and can make various everyday products.
While they have great qualities, the downside of organic materials is their poor stability, negative consequences on the environment, and higher construction costs. It's also non-renewable. Plastics, rubbers, resins, synthetic fibres, adhesives, dyes, detergents, pesticides, and petroleum-derived paints and coatings are examples of petrochemical products used commonly in Malaysia.
3. Other Insulation Materials
Although the materials listed above are more commonly known, they are not the only ones. Other insulation materials are Aerogel, which has recently become affordable and available, and Pyrogel, one of the world's most efficient industrial insulations. Its required thicknesses are 50% – 80% less than other insulation materials. Despite being slightly more expensive than some other insulation materials, Pyrogel is increasingly known for specific applications.
In Summary
There are several types of insulation building materials out there. Thus, it’s best to get advice from experts before deciding which ones to use in your project. A well-insulated building has lower heating and cooling costs because effective insulation reduces heat gain in hot weather and loss in cold environments.
